Giving me chills. Solidarity from Cape Breton, Canada. It's coal mining country here too. This all sounds like the miners strikes of Glace Bay, Cape Breton where the mining company tried to starve out workers.

My grandfather, born in 1874, who worked all his life in the coal mines of Walker County, Alabama, told me about shack rousters.  Apparently they were universal in coal country everywhere.

@fredwood1490

WoW!!! It's been a long time since I heard that, spoken by a Hillbilly, Miner's Daughter. Used to hear it a lot back in the 1950s, usually spoken by Miner's Wives and Daughters,  the Miners seldom spoke such words. Thank you! Good to hear it again. Looks like we are coming full circle though and the likes of Shack Rouster are waiting.

@SJ-ni6iy

Thanks for recording this, important part of history.

@maggieking6619

I stumbled on your video. I am an Appalachian woman, grew up in Adirondacks, Green MT's, graduated from VA Tech in the Blue Ridge. Met my husband in the Smokies, and my Scots ancestors lived in W. Maryland/W. VA. Named their company West VA Pulp.  I ...  I am so troubled by the direction this nation is headed. And it gets lonely so I was close to jumping up and cheering at the end of yr video.  You are an eloquent voice, genuine and empathetic. I hope we can talk more. Its late here and I am getting old. Somedays I just wanna lay the burden down, don't you?  Peace, sister, peace.

@hikerx9366

We love you too Jeana, and I will subscribe to your truth videos and pray the world changes for good to one of Peace, Love & Equality for all.

@4eyes2sea

I'm a grandmother of 11... you made me cry, and I subbed. I cry daily for the homeless in our country, t's a cryin' shame we're not smart enough to figure this out. Thank you sweet sister.

Such suffering that coal miners endured

You really should put all of the stories that you told in videos and publish them. As a student of history that loves looking at histories of very specific places, your stories so heavily inform on the history of our country.

@diesel9650

Amazing thank you so much for sharing this, I woke up singing this song and ask why... God led me here...

@JohnDoe-id1es , and explaining the historical significance of this song. Great personal story of your grandmother. You played and sang with heart, feeling, soul, and love. Very fortunate to have heard this.

@dorothynason6934

Dear Jeana I have been looking up the videos you have posted in the past. I sang this the same way as you did. I never knew the true meaning of it until today. I have the utmost respect for you and your dear Appalachian relatives. Thank you. I really appreciate how you stand up for the truth. Bless you my dear and I hope you make more videos. Everyone needs to know whether American or Canadian. I hope all is well with you and your family. Take care.

@cavecookie1

Your stories of how music was used as code just fascinates me.  It's a lot like partisans fighting an underground war against an occupying enemy force.  The miners had to use the same tactics to thwart their oppressors.  I've heard this song my entire life, and now at 64, I finally know what it means!  Thanks for the playing and singing!  Looks like G is a little low for your range!  LOL!  I could fill in for you there, that's just my key!

@thegiantrubberduckyssqueek3163

This is EXACTLY what i was looking for.  Thank you thank you thank you

@BonJody

Thank you for sharing this story  I really wish everyone knew the true meaning of it. I never knew the pink pajama version until I was watching a British t.v. show and that is how they were singing it. Myself and my family have all worked for and been apart of a heavy equipment union beginning with my grandpa being apart of it and working his way up. So I know about the plight of the workers  struggles and sacrifices that these men went through to get it organized.  I'm going to be sure to share it with everyone I can. Hopefully you'll get some more subscribers from it.

My Pawpaw, who was born in 1911 and his brother, born in 1909 were right in the middle of this in southern WV. And my Dad and many of his brothers reaped the benefits working in the coal mines from the fifties through the eighties, after it became a good paying and much safer job. Just found your channel. Fantastic!

@shaneomen8350

You are doing important historical work and giving insight to our ugly past. Thank you. Those who forget their past will be doomed to repeat it.

@valkyrie1066

History isn't for us to approve of or not approve of; it is there for us to learn.  Which means as they say "Warts and all" We need to know that, too.

@matttaylor2009

This history needs to be shared far and wide.

@cavecookie1

Wow, I just had no idea how bad it really was for those miners.  The code hidden in the music really hit me. I play bluegrass banjo, and love the music of Appalachia; so genuine and expressive!  Great story, I see a binge coming up!

@scottwalker2482

Just discovered your channel...Right on time! Thank you for doing what you are doing...New subscriber!

@warwickmudge4114

Good work. Tell those stories, the forces of oppression are getting stronger again people need to be reminded of the good fight.

@rebeccaaugustin2223

I adore these stories
